Automates AP and P2P
How Veidekke uses AI-driven invoice automation to stay in control at scale
Discover how Veidekke uses AI-driven invoice automation to improve control, gain deeper financial insight, and strengthen project management across large, complex operations. Because in construction, an invoice is far more than just another expense.

From manual processing to intelligent automation at scale
Veidekke processes around 350,000 invoices every year across complex construction and infrastructure projects throughout Norway. With eye-share, the company has transformed their invoice management process from manual, rule-based workflows to an AI-powered, data-driven approach that enables finance teams to focus less on routine processing and more on exceptions, financial insight, and control.
Today, 70% of invoices are processed through automated workflows with AI-generated coding suggestions, while project managers benefit from faster access to up-to-date financial data, stronger cost control, and more reliable insights for decision-making.
Veidekke is one of Scandinavia's largest construction and infrastructure companies. Founded in Norway in 1936, the company began with cobblestone paving and has since grown into a leading contractor, building and maintaining roads, tunnels, bridges, and commercial and residential properties across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Today, Veidekke employs around 8,000 people and is guided by a vision of putting people first. The company generates annual revenue of approximately NOK 43 billion.
The challenge
Maintaining control in a highly complex environment
As one of Scandinavia's largest construction and property development companies, Veidekke manages a vast volume of invoices, project costs, subcontractors, and procurement activities across complex construction and infrastructure projects every day.
For Veidekke, an invoice is much more than an accounting document. Invoice data provides critical insight into:
-
Project progess.
- Cost control.
- Cash flow.
- Contract compliance.
- Sustainability reporting.
- Business decision-making.
On large-scale tunnel, road, and construction projects involving hundreds of suppliers, having accurate, up-to-date financial data readily available is essential.
- A project manager's most important responsibility is maintaining control. All cost management happens in eye-share—from invoices to travel expenses and employee reimbursements. On complex projects, continuous cost monitoring is essential, making this one of the most important tools they have, says Torhill Gysland Falnes, CEO at Eye-share.
Until recently, Veidekke's invoice process relied heavily on predefined rules and required significant manual maintenance and oversight. Although the process was digital, the finance team still had to review every invoice manually.
- In 2023, we realised there was a different way to approach this. Our goal became ensuring that finance only needs to handle exceptions. That's when true automation began, says Camilla Weber, Finance Director at Veidekke Fellestjenester.
Today, 70% of our invoices pass through the system without any manual intervention from the finance team.

Why it worked
AI alone doesn't solve the problem
For Veidekke, success wasn't primarily about implementing new technology. It was about building the right foundation through:
- Standardisation.
- Process improvement.
- High-quality data.
- Change management.
- Organisational trust and adoption.
Before AI could deliver real value, these fundamentals had to be in place.
- AI is an amplifier. If you have a well-designed process, AI can deliver tremendous value. But if your processes are poor and your data is inconsistent, AI simply amplifies those weaknesses, says Camilla Weber.
A key part of the transformation was increasing the share of electronic invoices while ensuring the incoming data was structured, complete, and reliable.
- Today, 97% of Veidekke's invoices are received electronically, says Endre Hansen, Eye-share System Manager at Veidekke.
The company also standardised key elements across the organisation, including:
-
Project references.
- Department structures.
- Master data.
- Workflows.
- Roles and responsibilities.
Together, these improvements created the foundation for secure, scalable AI-powered automation.

The solution
Intelligent automation with eye-share
The solution is deeply integrated into Veidekke's finance and project management processes, supporting AI-powered coding suggestions, approval workflows, and post-processing controls at scale. Today, more than 1000 employees use eye-share across the organisation.
Within Veidekke's construction division, automated coding and post-processing controls are already in place, while other parts of the business are gradually adopting increasingly automated workflows.
- We've set up a solution where every invoice enters the system with the supplier and project already identified. Based on a standardised setup, invoices are automatically routed through the workflow with coding suggestions. We do very little manual handling upfront and instead focus on post-processing controls, says Ole Martin Landsem, Systems and Finance Controller at Veidekke.
The Technology behind intelligent invoice automation
The results
More automation. Greater control. Better insight.
By combining standardised processes, high-quality data, and AI-powered automation, Veidekke has transformed the way it manages invoice processing and financial operations—achieving measurable improvements in efficiency, control, and decision-making.
- Today, we have live data in eye-share that we can access at any time. The faster invoices move through the process, the more accurate our financial reporting becomes and the better our project teams can monitor costs, says Camilla Weber.
Operational benefits
Finance teams primarily handle exceptions
Strategic benefits
Organisational benefits
When invoice data becomes strategic insight
For Veidekke, invoice data serves a much greater purpose than processing payments and maintaining financial records. It has become a valuable source of business insight. For example, CO₂ emissions data from ready-mix concrete is extracted directly from electronic invoices.
- Veidekke has set ambitious sustainability goals, including a 50% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2045. To achieve that, we need reliable, high-quality data, says Ole Martin Landsem.
Using structured electronic invoice data, Veidekke can also validate item-level pricing against supplier agreements and project estimates, helping ensure greater cost accuracy and control.
Today, invoice data also supports:
Change management
Technology only works when people embrace it
The implementation wasn't just about introducing new technology or automating processes.
It was about building confidence across the organisation.
Veidekke began by running pilot projects in selected companies, developing practical support tools, and working closely with project managers and employees across the country to ensure a smooth transition.
- The biggest part of the job has been meeting project managers across Norway and saying, 'This is how we're going to do it.' Our role has been to guide them through the change and make sure they feel supported every step of the way, says Camilla Weber.
As expected, the early stages brought some challenges and a degree of scepticism around AI and automation.
Through close collaboration, training, and a gradual rollout, that scepticism was replaced with trust.
- Meeting with teams across all our companies has been incredibly valuable. We've built much stronger relationships with them than we had before, says Endre Hansen.
Secure automation
Built on trust, security, and strong governance
For Veidekke, security and control are embedded throughout the entire finance process.
Control is no longer just about bank accounts and payments. It's about how roles, permissions, and responsibilities are designed within the system, so that internal controls are built into the process itself, says Camilla Weber.
As a cloud-based platform, eye-share is designed with security, access management, and internal controls at its core. The platform supports organisations across industries such as construction, energy, healthcare, banking, the public sector, and defence- sectors where security, compliance, and auditability are essential.
- We do everything we can to ensure the highest possible level of security, says Torhill Gysland Falnes.
Eye-share is ISAE certified and continuously invests in security, governance, and compliance as an integral part of both the platform and its operations.
Looking ahead
Veidekke sees automation and AI as strategic enablers for future growth and scalability.
The goal isn't necessarily to reduce headcount, but to handle increasing volumes with the same organisation—while continuing to improve quality, efficiency, and financial insight.
- It's rewarding to know we're contributing to the business by supporting growth without increasing our costs at the same pace, says Camilla Weber.
The collaboration between Veidekke and eye-share continues to evolve as both companies explore new opportunities to drive automation and innovation.
If we don't keep moving forward now, we won't be competitive in five or six years, says Ole Martin Landsem.
