About
Equinor is an international energy company focused on long-term value creation in a low-carbon future. They transform natural resources into energy, driving progress for society. Their portfolio includes oil and gas, renewable energy, and low-carbon solutions, with a clear ambition to become climate neutral by 2050. Headquartered in Stavanger, Norway, Equinor is the leading operator on the Norwegian continental shelf and operates in approximately 30 countries worldwide.
Equinor, one of the world's largest energy companies, has achieved significant savings and efficiency in its purchasing processes through the implementation of the eye-share Portal. What began as a pilot project focused on process improvement has now transformed the way Equinor collaborates with its suppliers.
"We wanted to set a standard in the market and be a pioneering company," says Arne Johan Larsen, Lead Analyst at Equinor. Today, the company operates a fully automated process for sending and receiving orders, with plans to expand the solution to over 6,000 suppliers across Norway, Europe, and eventually the United States.
The challenge: Time-consuming and complex ordering processes
As a large purchasing organization, Equinor faced challenges managing the wide variety of order formats used by its suppliers. Each process required manual follow-ups, consuming valuable time and resources. Compounding this was an outdated, costly proprietary system that no longer met Equinor’s digitization goals.
"We wanted to be at the forefront of digitization and create value through new digital tools," Larsen explains. The objective was clear: simplify and automate purchasing while paving the way for streamlined invoicing.
The solution: Automated EHF integration with eye-share Portal
Equinor’s solution leverages EHF Advanced Order Processing, with TietoEVRY acting as the access point for sending and receiving all electronic orders. For suppliers unable to process EHF orders, the eye-share Portal steps in to bridge the gap. Suppliers receive notifications of new orders through the portal, which they can process, fulfill, and use to generate invoices directly tied to the orders. The portal integrates smoothly with Equinor’s ERP system (SAP), enabling direct order-to-invoice matching. Suppliers benefit from an intuitive platform, reducing onboarding time and errors. "We kept the solution simple, and that simplicity is its greatest strength," Larsen highlights.
The gains: Time, cost and quality improvements
Equinor’s transition to automated purchasing has yielded significant benefits. Processing time has been reduced by approximately one hour per order. Across 160,000 annual orders, this equates to massive time and resource savings. Automated matching ensures fewer discrepancies, reducing time spent on corrections and follow-ups. Faster payments and streamlined processes create a win-win scenario for both Equinor and its suppliers. "The efficiency gains are substantial, not just for us but for our suppliers as well," says Larsen.
A scalable solution for the industry
The success of the eye-share Portal at Equinor demonstrates its potential as a scalable solution for other organizations. "This is not just a custom-built system for Equinor; it’s a proof-of-concept for the entire market," Larsen notes. The project establishes a new standard for collaboration between customers and suppliers, showcasing how automation can drive value across industries.
A global rollout and continuous innovation
Equinor is now rolling out the solution to over 6,000 suppliers in Norway, with plans to expand across Europe and the United States. The company is also exploring ways to enhance functionality, including addressing more complex supplier requirements.
"We see this as just the beginning," Larsen says. "The collaboration with Eye-share has been fantastic. Their flexibility and ability to deliver quickly have been key to the project’s success."
